Patients air their grievances about lack of facilities

ALAPPUZHA: Members of the State Legislative Assembly Committee who inspected the Vandanam Medical College Hospital here on Thursday were flooded by complaints from patients and attendants over the lack of facilities in the hospital.

The committee, comprising Joseph M. Puthussery, C.H. Kunhambu and M.K. Premnath, MLAs, had inspected the hospital during its visit to the district headquarters to receive complaints and proposals on various matters from local authorities. However, as they entered the children’s ward, patients and attendants surrounded the team and started pointing out the miserable conditions in the ward.

While the toilets were in an appalling condition, the lack of beds meant that several ailing children had to lie on the floor. Some beds accommodated up to three children. Parents were heard complaining that to look after over 100 children, there were only two or at the most, three nurses. Attendants also complained that the only outpatient ticket counter being set up at the furthest corner of the campus was causing lot of difficulties for them.

The Committee, which saw for itself the poor sanitary conditions, pulled up the authorities asking them why there was no regular cleaning in the hospital, particularly in the children’s ward.

The committee also asked the hospital management to appoint temporary contract staff and to ensure that hygiene was maintained in the hospital.

The team, which earlier held a meeting at the District Collectorate, was accompanied by Director of Medical Education V. Sudevkumar, Environment Secretary C.K. Viswanath, Additional District Magistrate Koshy John and MCH Principal Ramla Beevi among others.
