Three rogue elephants sedated

Special Correspondent

SRIKAKULAM: As a first step in the execution of ‘operation Gaja’ to drive away the nine rogue elephants to their natural habitat in Orissa, forest officials on Thursday used tranquilisers to make three elephants semi-conscious.

Bijayonand Chowdhury, an expert in this type of operation and in tackling elephants menace, guided the officials in sedating the elephants which might include the tusk-less male elephant. The other two tuskers are females and all of them were lying in a state of semi-consciousness in Toorpuvalasa village.

According to B. V. Ramanababu, DFO, the sedated elephants would be bound by iron chains.
