Arunachal to get its first jail soon

Itanagar: Admitting that the present practice in Arunachal Pradesh of keeping undertrials in police lock-ups was a violation of their human rights, State Home Minister Jarobam Gamlin on Thursday said the first jail in the State would be inaugurated soon.

At present undertrials in Arunachal Pradesh are kept in police lock-ups till they are chargesheeted, he said at a joint press conference with State Law Minister Tako Dabi. Once the recruitment of wardens is over, the jail would be inaugurated, he said. The construction of the jail was completed and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil had come to inaugurate it but had to cancel the programme because of the demise of Pope John Paul II. -- PTI
