Letters to the Editor
The pronouncement of verdicts on a single day in different cases involving crimes committed in 1992, 1997, 1998, and 2003 and convicting the offenders of various stature from Mr. and Mrs. politician, policemen, rioters and terrorists with the same quantum of punishment — life imprisonment — has certainly raised the hopes of the common man and instilled faith in the criminal justice system of India. D. Narasa Raju, Visakhapatnam The sentencing of 10 policemen for killing two businessmen in the Connaught Place shooting incident in 1997 to life is a landmark judgment. It has not only done justice to the kin of the victims but has also sent a warning to all those policemen who think they are all-powerful on wearing the khaki. The police are an integral part of the state, which is based on the principle of welfare. Why should their act of mercilessly gunning down innocent citizens and fabricating the facts after doing so not be considered the “rarest of rare”? Ankur Sharma, Ghaziabad Wednesday was ‘judgment day’ with courts across the nation awarding punishments in high-profile cases. This should reinforce the common man’s faith in the judiciary and provide some relief to those who have suffered silently and waited all these years for the day of judgment. But it is too early to say that justice has prevailed as the convicts have the opportunity to approach the higher courts. Inamdar Ramchandra, Bangalore
