Letters to the Editor
The article “Back to the old style of governance?” (Oct. 25) is a good commentary on the state of politics surrounding the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal. It rightly points to the democratic follies of the government. Rather than working constructively towards common objectives, the deliberations between the government and the Left parties have been used to highlight their political differences. The two groups do not seem to have enough time or commitment to iron out their differences or educate the people. Instead, they are buying time to get ready for elections. It should be understood that a failed deal will make a dent in India’s credibility and it will take a lot of time and diplomatic efforts to repair it. Arivendu Bhardwaj, Gurgaon The Congress has at last realised that the opposition by the Left parties to the operationalisation of the nuclear deal is serious. Though late, its decision has saved the country from another election. But the UPA government’s fate still hangs in the balance, a fact that is evident from the murmurs in the alliance. The communal parties are watching the developments with keen interest to do what they can to dislodge the government. We hope the ruling coalition will not allow the communalists a chance to fish in troubled waters. T. Radhakrishna Menon, Palakkad
