Letters to the Editor
I am totally in disagreement with the opinion expressed by a group of eminent citizens that the government should support a U.N. resolution that seeks a global moratorium on executions (Oct. 24). The motto that even if 1000 guilty people escape the clutches of the law, one innocent person should not be punished is worth being re-examined. The people arguing for the abolition of the death penalty should realise that the life of one who rapes a young girl and kills her or one who kills security guards guarding Parliament is not more valuable than the lives of the victims. Fear is the only deterrent that can reduce crime in the present times when morality and discipline are at an all-time low. The fundamental right to life should not be extended to a person who denies the same to another. C. Govindan, Hosur
