Study to modernise sub-basins

Reconstruction of sluices and weirs, besides strengthening of anicuts planned

ARIYALUR: To augment irrigation facilities in rain-fed Perambalur district, Public Works Department has taken up a study for rejuvenation and modernisation of Aanaivari and Chinnaru sub-basins.

Infrastructure in basin command areas is to be strengthened under a World Bank-assisted ‘Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management’ project.

This aims at introduction of a multi-disciplinary approach focussing on enhancement of productivity. Improvements in irrigation system through intelligent cropping pattern will be advocated as part of the programme.

There are 52 PWD tanks irrigating 3,850 acres.

While 18 tanks in Aanaivari sub-basin irrigate 850 acres, the rest irrigate about 3,000 acres.

“The modernisation programme entails reconstruction of sluices and weirs, besides strengthening of anicuts. Improvement of supply channels and field channels will also be taken up,” Collector Anil Meshram said here on Thursday.

The programme will be implemented in co-ordination with various departments and agencies. The Agricultural Engineering Department will provide micro-irrigation facilities and execute on-farm development programmes.

The Agriculture Department will launch technology demonstration projects.

Likewise, Agriculture Marketing and Agri-Business departments will evolve value-addition and market support techniques by providing drying yard, godown and cold-storage facility.

Animal Husbandry Department will take up fodder development activities and explore the possibility of setting up poultry units.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University will be involved in agriculture development activities.
