Towards bringing out the talent of young directors

BHUBANESWAR: Rang Pratibha Theatre festival, which will be exhibiting the directorial talents of ten young directors in the State, in the age group of 25 to 35, will kick start in the city on October 28. It will be a week-long event.

First-of-its-kind event in Orissa, it is being hosted by the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi in association with the Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi. It will be staged at the RRL (Regional Research Laboratory) auditorium in Acharya Vihar.

The list of productions selected to be staged includes two translated plays in Sambalpuri and a tribal play and six plays in Oriya.

The first play scheduled on the inaugural day is ‘Maunsa’ by Uttarayani Club of Jatni and directed by Biplab Keshari Satpathy. ‘Nagamandal’ by NQ Theatre of Bhubaneswar and directed by Nalini Nihar Nayak will be staged on Monday.

On Tuesday, Subash Pradhan directed play ‘Dwitiya Gandhi’ will be staged by SDA Mirror Theatre of Belpahad while Balasore-based Nayeeka Theatre troupe led by the only women director in the festival, Susmita Rana will present ‘Janani Janmabhumischa’ on Wednesday followed by ‘Ahata Murchhana’ by Ganjam Kala Parishad of Berhampur directed by Kamakshya Prasad Patra.

Bhubaneswar-based Mirror Theatre group and Prayas of Rourkela will present their plays ‘Titli’ and ‘Chaitu’ respectively on Thursday. The plays have been directed by Siba Tripathy and Prafulla Sethi respectively. Similarly two plays will be staged on Friday – ‘Kayakalpa’ by Rangashala Theatre group of Puri directed by Vikram Sahu and ‘Matimaa’ by Adim troupe of Bhawanipatna directed by Parameswar Mund.

Curtains will come down on the festival with ‘No exit’ by Bhubaneswar-based Maskman Theatre and directed by Manas Kumar Sahu.

Two observers from the east zone and four experts from four regions in the country, who are appointed by the Akademi will judge the plays.

Meanwhile, interaction between the audience with the directors and the troupes of the plays staged, will be held on the next day at Panth Nivas. Till now, Rang Pratibha Theatre Festival for young theatre directors was organised in ten States, it was learnt.
