Rich tributes paid to the erstwhile Kittur queen Kittur: The need for fresh research on the Kittur princely State and its queen Rani Channamma was underscored at a seminar for women on the second day of “Kittur Utsav 2007” here on Wednesday. The topics of the seminar were “Kittur Samsthanada Raniyaru”, “Belvadi Samsthanada Raniyaru” and “Shirasingi Samsthanada Raniyaru”. Sri Murghendra Swamiji of Athani graced the occasion. Deputy Commissioner M.E. Shivalingmurthy was present. Addressing the gathering, journalist Vijaya from Bangalore paid rich tributes to Rani Channamma, who waged a war against the British army in 1824; Belvadi Mallamma, who raised an army of women; and Channamma of Shirsangi, who worked towards spreading patriotism and uniting people against the alien rule. The present generation should know their contribution and sacrifices, she said. Writer Shashikala Veeraiahswamy and Siddagangamma also paid rich tributes to Rani Channamma, Belvadi Mallamma and Channamma. TournamentsVolleyball and kabbadi tournaments held on the occasion evoked a good response.
