The Government has approved action plan to promote growing of fruit Construction of community ponds to be encouraged Chitradurga: The Government spent Rs. 4.92 crore under the National Horticulture Mission to provide financial assistance to 2,334 farmers in the current financial year. According to officials of the Horticulture Department, the Government has approved an action plan of Rs. 60.45 lakh to promote the cultivation of fruits such as banana, mango, sapota, pomegranate and mosambi. A sum of Rs. 1.82 crore has been allocated for the expansion of cultivable land and Rs. 89.75 lakh for developing 582 cares of land for floriculture. Funds will be provided for cultivation of flowers such as rose, jasmine, crossandra, chrysanthemum and aster. A sum of Rs. 2.56 lakh will be provided for the cultivation of cashew and medicinal plants. Schemes have been formulated to provide financial aid for setting up greenhouses and shade nets for vegetable crops. Water schemeUnder the rainwater harvesting and restoration of water sources scheme, the Government will release up to Rs. 10 lakh for constructing community ponds. Farmers with landholdings of up to four acres will be eligible for Rs. 10,000 each for the replacement or grafting of of arecanut, mango and pomegranate trees. Many pomegranate farmers have lost their crop to pest attacks. Farmers with a maximum of four hectares of land will be given Rs. 22,000. A sum of Rs. 55 lakh has been reserved for organic farming.
