DAVANGERE: Torrential rainfall has breached a number of tanks, including the Gurusiddappana tank, in Jagalur taluk. Some check-dams, including the Basavanakote check-dam, have been washed away. Latha Kumari, Assistant Commissioner of Harpanahalli division, who visited Jagalur on Thursday, told The Hindu that she had directed the tahsildar and other officials to assess the extent of damage to private and public property in the taluk and submit a report in two days. She said farmers whose crops had been damaged would be provided compensation. To a query, she said she was verifying whether it was poor quality of work or the intensity of rainfall that washed away the check-dams. Several houses had also been damaged. Compensation would be given to the affected persons once the assessment was completed, she added. Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi has convened a meeting of senior officials to discuss the damage to property. A comprehensive report on the damage will be submitted to the Governor.
