ARUPPUKOTTAI: The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, distributed benefits under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance scheme to 703 pregnant women here on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ramachandran said that the scheme was unique in the country and was aimed at providing nutritious food for all pregnant women during the 8th, 9th and 10th months of pregnancy and the first, 2nd and 3rd months after delivery so that the newborns weighed at least 3 kg at birth.
The State Government had allocated Rs.200 crore for the scheme during the current year and the district would get around Rs.2.50 crore.
Mr. Ramachandran gave away Rs.19.50 lakh at the function.
Mr. Ramachandran said that camps would be organised to identify children with heart ailments and those with cleft lips and palates.
Those children registered with the Government hospitals would be provided free surgery on seniority basis. The Aruppukottai Revenue Divisional Officer, Venkatesan, participated.
