The Bangalore complex of BEML will manufacture the metro cars Bangalore: Rail and Metro Business Group of BEML Limited has bagged a Rs.1,144-crore global tender for manufacture and supply of 156 state-of-the-art standard gauge stainless steel metro cars, from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). According to a press release, this is the single largest contract BEML has bagged. The Bangalore complex of the BEML will manufacture the metro cars. Delivery of the cars is expected to be over by 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The central public sector unit is likely to get an additional order of 36 metro cars from the DMRC. The group has tied up with IL & FS for working as a consortium to bag the metro projects in the country, and BEML will supply rolling stock and spares and provide after sales service. BEML and IL & FS combine is also exploring the possibility to work on the city centre to international airport segment of the Metro project in Hyderabad and Bangalore and possibly other projects on a BOOT basis. The release said that BEML was also exploring avenues to establish a joint venture with an international player for manufacturing various types of bogies in the country. By taking the lead in the manufacture of standard gauge metro cars for the first time in the country, BEML Limited is confident of capturing the metro car market in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and tier-II cities, which are all based on standard gauge. BEML Limited has set for itself a corporate goal of achieving Rs. 5,000-crore turnover by 2013-14 coinciding with its golden jubilee year. It has forayed into contract mining business, both in India and abroad, through a joint venture and promotes marketing of non-company products through its trading division. The e-engineering services and solutions offered through its technology division is the latest addition to the company’s diversified business activities. The release pointed out that the company had overseas market base in 43 countries and was endeavouring to globalise its operations and presence through its overseas offices in China and Singapore, international office-cum-warehouse at Kuala Lumpur and Johar Bharu in Malaysia, and an overseas marketing office and assembly plant in Brazil.
