Dhaka to Kolkata train talks ‘on’

Haroon Habib

DHAKA: Bangladesh has explained its position on the commencement of the Dhaka-Kolkata passenger train after a question arose in a section of the media on its “reluctance” to launch the service.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman told the media that discussions were on and a draft of the agreement on the service was sent to the Indian authorities. In a press release, the Ministry said a response from India was awaited.

While the delay in the start of the service has started hitting the headlines, the Indian High Commissioner here, Pinak R. Chakrabarty, has blamed Bangladesh for non-resumption of railway communication.

He wanted the “psychological partition” ended forthwith.

“Railway communication requires infrastructure and security. Bangladesh is apparently not willing to help ensure security,” he said to a gathering of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.
