Nine more sentenced to life in Coimbatore serial blasts cases

Sentences for five remaining accused to be pronounced today

COIMBATORE: Nine more persons were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Coimbatore serial blasts cases on Thursday.

Judge of the Special Court for Serial Blasts Case K. Uthirapathy, who continued to sentence those found guilty of major charges such as conspiracy and murder, awarded sentences to 30 accused.

While three of them were awarded life imprisonment, two were given double life-terms, 13 were sentenced to 13 years rigorous imprisonment (RI), six others given ten years RI each and two persons sentenced to seven years RI.

The sentences were for offences such as criminal conspiracy read with other offences such as rioting, attempt to murder, murder, abetment, forgery under the Indian Penal Code besides offences under the Explosive Substances Act and the Indian Arms Act

The sentences would run concurrently. The trial period would be set off against the sentence. Two persons who were awarded seven years RI and three of the six persons who were awarded 10 years RI were later released.

Four persons awarded 10 years RI on Wednesday were also released after remission and setting off of the trial period against the sentence.

The Special Court has now sentenced 40 persons to life imprisonment, 13 persons to 13 years RI, ten persons to ten years RI and two persons to seven years RI.

Mr. Uthirapathy announced that the court on Friday would pronounce the sentences for five of the remaining accused and announce the proceedings for the approver, Riaz-Ur-Rehman.
