Thiruvananthapuram: The attitude of the police was not at all helpful to women who approach them with complaints of domestic violence, chairperson of State Women’s Commission, D. Sridevi said. Briefing press persons on the activities of the Commission here on Thursday, Ms. Sridevi said that police were supposed to file incidence reports on domestic violence cases to the magistrate as soon as they receive complaints but this was not happening. In fact, some police officers were downright hostile to the women and often adopted a stance favourable to the perpetrators of violence, she added. She said that the Commission had been receiving a large number of complaints from women regarding domestic violence ever since the Domestic Violence Act had been enacted. Ms. Sridevi said that complaints relating to harassment at workplaces were also up and that even women working in respectable and senior positions were not being spared. Though committees to look into such complaints had been instituted in all government departments, these were lax when the complaints were against the heads of institutions or departments, she said.An adalat will be organised on October 27 at Neyyattinkara in which 188 cases would be taken up.
