MADURAI: The Corporation has been allotted Rs. one crore for distribution as cash assistance to beneficiaries under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Assistance Scheme. According to A. Palanichamy, Deputy Director of Health Services, the district has received a total of Rs.3.59 crore in the third phase from the State Government of which Rs. one crore has been given to the civic body now. He said on Thursday that pregnant women would be given cash assistance of Rs.6,000 to improve their nutrition status during pregnancy and deliver a healthy baby. “The allotment was made on Monday and distribution will be taken up immediately through the Corporation and primary health centres (PHCs),” the Deputy Director said. “Earlier, there were complaints in certain quarters that the distribution of assistance was not carried out properly. So, this time we are handing over the allotment amount to the Corporation Commissioner who would monitor the implementation,” Dr. Palanichamy said. Rs.9.58 crore so farSo far, the district has received Rs.9.58 crore in three phases from the Government for the scheme that benefits pregnant women identified from the below-poverty-line (BPL) category in both urban and rural areas.
