COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has asked the district administrations to identify to two or three villages with good practices, such as water conservation, and ecological attractions, in every district and forward proposals on developing tourism in these places. The Director of Tourism and Managing Director of the Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation, M. Rajaram, told presspersons here on Tuesday that it was “in the process of establishing rural tourism.” Further, he said, “we want to promote medical tourism in Coimbatore.” In Chennai, a medical tourism desk had been established. The participating hospitals had been requested to establish a travel desk too. Some of these destinations are Kolli hills, Gulf of Mannar and Yercaud. He said tourist arrival to Coimbatore District in 2006 was 35.09 lakh and this year it was 28 lakh till September. The number of international tourists visiting the District was also going up. Works were on at Kovai Coutrallam at a cost of Rs. 60.42 lakh to improve facilities. This included construction of rest shed, parking area, etc. Many of the works were nearing completion. At Vellingiri Hills, works were on at Rs. 75 lakh. The Corporation had allotted Rs. 2.76 crore for development of Anamalai in the district.
