In deep water: Villages in Chidambaram have been inundated by the heavy rain lashing the region. —

CUDDALORE: Intermittent rain lashing the district for the past three days has affected mining operations in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

Owing to flooding, excavation of lignite was proving tough, forcing the management to restrict power generation to 1,200 MW against the total capacity of 2,490 MW. NLC sources said since maintenance works were under way in Thermal Power Station-I, TPS-I Expansion and TPS-II, power generation had already been curtailed to 740 MW.

These units were being run with buffer stocks of lignite.

Copious inflow

The Veeranam tank is getting a copious inflow of 3,000 cusecs. Authorities are watching the water level. To avert floods, the authorities are maintaining the water level at 44.5 ft as against the full capacity of 47.5 ft.

At least 25 villages in Chidambaram and Kattumannarkoil taluks have been inundated. About 30 families have been evacuated. Cyclone shelters are ready to meet any exigencies. A 35-year-old person was reportedly washed away in flash floods in the Jayankondam canal on Wednesday.

Officials of the Agriculture Department have been deployed to assess the condition of standing crop.

In Chidambaram town, housing colonies at Indira Nagar, Sivasakthi Nagar, Thillai Kaliamman Koil Street and Ambedkar Nagar had knee-deep water. The compound wall of a school collapsed.

After inspecting the affected areas, the Collector told reporters that the PWD had kept ready 54,000 bags of sand. Three boats each had been deployed at Kumaratchi, Kattumannarkoil and Chidambaram municipal areas to evacuate people if the need arose.
