MADURAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry has expressed serious concern over the absence of skills among workers. Of the 12.5 million people joining the workforce every year, only 3.5 million possessed a basic diploma or any other qualification, according to Gopal Srinivasan, chairman, CII-Tamil Nadu State Council.
Delivering the inaugural address at ‘Madurai Rubber 2007,’ a conference held here on Thursday, he said rubber-based industries in Madurai could come together to start an institute to develop skills. He suggested that it be modelled on the lines of the CII’s Information and Communication Technology Institute in Chennai, a public-private partnership venture. The industries had invested Rs. 10 crore the institute, he told journalists later.
P. Vijayaraghavan, president, Baroda manufacturing plant of Reliance Industries, said public-private partnership would also help in development of society.
V. Krishnamurthy, chairman, CII-Madurai zone, said the State Government had been urged to set up a rubber park in Madurai. “Infrastructure is the key to development in this region. South Tamil Nadu has a huge, talented workforce, and the attrition rate is very less.”
W.S. Satchidanandam, chairman of the conference, said India, Malaysia and Thailand accounted for 72 per cent of natural rubber production.
R. Dinesh, vice-chairman, CII Madurai zone, spoke.
