“Centre giving priority to protect State fishermen”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Central Government is giving priority to protect fishermen of Tamil Nadu from Sri Lankan Navy, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has stated in a letter to the State Government.

An official release said the reply from the External Affairs Minister was in response to the request made by Union Minister of Shipping, Surface Transport and Highways T.R.Baalu, who sought the Union Government’s intervention to release 10 fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Mukherjee said the Indian Government had, time and again, insisted that the Sri Lankan Navy give up taking severe action against fishermen from Tamil Nadu and treat them with humaneness.

At present no fishermen from India is being held by the Sri Lankan Navy, the External Affairs Minister informed the State Government, the release said.
