Mamata ridicules Nandigram compensation package

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday ridiculed the State government’s move to provide a compensation package to the families of those killed in the police firing at Nandigram in West Bengal’s Purbo Medinipur district on March 14.

Eight persons were killed in the firing. Six others died in the violence that followed on that day.

“What compensation? They [the administration] have not yet issued death certificates of the victims. They are only talking of 14 deaths when many more died in the firing,” Ms. Banerjee said.

She alleged that CPI(M) cadres were still “unleashing terror” on the people of Nandigram.

Ms. Banerjee, whose party is backing the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee, has been demanding the arrest of those responsible for the deaths there on March 14 and has vowed to continue her campaign till the guilty are booked.
