Court grants bail to Dera chief

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: A designated CBI Court in Ambala on Thursday granted regular bail to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, chief of the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda sect, in three cases — two of murder and one of sexual harassment — registered against him.

Special CBI Judge R.K. Saini on Monday reserved his order at the conclusion of arguments. He pronounced the order granting regular bail to the Dera head on Thursday afternoon.

Dera spokesman Aditya Insaan asserted that the charges against sect chief were “baseless” and that “truth will prevail.”

There was unprecedented security in Ambala and Sirsa and additional forces were deployed to tackle any untoward incident.

The CBI had filed three charge sheets against the Dera head in connection with the murder of Ranjit Singh and a Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chatterpati and alleged sexual harassment of a woman disciple.

CBI counsel said an appeal would be filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
