NEW DELHI: Delhi University will revisit the First War of Independence by organising a major series of events over the next couple of months to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1857 uprising. Programmes plannedThe events will be organised by teachers and students of various colleges and departments to generate a wider interest in the First War of Independence. Apart from the event being of great significance to the history of modern India, a great deal of activity associated with the event was centred round the North Campus of Delhi University. The event will be inaugurated on Friday at the University Convention Hall. The University and Alkazi Foundation for the Arts will collaborate to mount an exhibition of photographs on “Traces of the Uprising, 1857” from October 26 to November 20 at the University Conference Centre. The exhibition will showcase a selection of 19th Century photographs from the Alkazi collection relating to three sectors of the uprising: Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow with a special focus on Delhi. Several acclaimed films like “Shatranj Ke Khilari”, “Junoon” and “Jhansi ki Rani” will also be screened. On October 30, the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies will organise a two-day conference on “European Responses to the 1857 Rebellion in India”.
