Savings agents’ union petitions President

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The National Savings Agents Association here has petitioned President Pratibha Patel for steps to mitigate the sufferings of scores of women who eke out a meagre livelihood through the Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojna.

Office-bearers of the association said at a press conference here on Friday that in the memorandum, the agents had appealed to Ms. Patel to initiate steps to enhance the interest rate on the three-year post office deposits on a par with that in nationalised banks. The memorandum wanted the five-year deposit rate enhanced higher than those offered by nationalised banks and reinstatement of the 10 per cent bonus on maturity of the Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) and the agents’ messenger system.

Many appeals had been made to the Union and the State governments, they said.

Hundreds of women agents supported their families with the small income earned from commission from postal savings collected on a door-to-door basis. With banks increasing interest rates, the public had lost interest in Postal Savings Scheme. Many had withdrawn from the scheme, they said.
