Water charges had been hiked steeply
Cadres raise slogans against the civic body SALEM: Members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday staged a demonstration against Salem Corporation. They claimed that the corporation had hiked the water tariff despite having failed to provide adequate drinking water to its citizens. InadequateThey claimed that Corporation had also found to be grossly inadequate to carry out sanitary works properly in the city. No opportunityThe cadres raised slogans against the Civic body. They also alleged that they had not been given opportunity to speak about the public grievances in the council meetings. Emergency meetingThe members said that water charges had been steeply hiked thus forcing the poor to suffer. Even the deposit amount also was increased manifold. Water charges were raised at an emergency meeting of the council recently. ResolutionThe members claimed that despite their opposition, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led council passed the resolution seeking the increase in water tariff. Organising secretary K. Palanichamy presided. Urban Secretary M. K. Selvaraj and others took part in the agitation.
