AIADMK seeks action against illegal sand mining

Special Correspondent

“Authorities conniving with traders”

“Owners of lorries used for such activity

should be fined”

“Give 75 per cent subsidy on diesel to farmers having tractors”

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Friday urged the government to take immediate steps to check illegal sand mining in the Union Territory.

A resolution adopted at a meeting of party functionaries accused the authorities of “conniving” with the persons who indulged in illegal sand mining at many places.

The owners of the lorries used for such illegal activity should be fined a minimum of Rs.30,000, it said, calling for steps to prevent “irregularities and corruption” in the sale of sand by the Puducherry Agro Products, Food and Civil Supplies Corporation and Puducherry Agro Services and Industries Corporation.

The meeting flayed the government for not taking steps to prevent frequent power disruption owing to “power theft.”

Paddy procurement price

Through another resolution, the meeting demanded that Rs. 1,000 per quintal should be fixed as the procurement price of paddy and Rs.1,500 per tonne of sugarcane.

The government should provide 75 per cent subsidy on diesel supplied to the farmers having tractors, it said.

The meeting wanted the government to ensure that ‘Deepavali’ bonus was disbursed 10 days ahead of the festival.

It also wanted the government to provide Rs. 3,000 as bonus for workers in the unorganised sector.

Funds diversion

It alleged that the government had “diverted” the Special Component Plan Funds to the tune of Rs. 800 crore for other purposes during the last 10 years.

Special camps should be held to enrol all the voters left out, the party said, urging the government to immediately distribute relief package to the people affected by the rain.
