Chief Minister to inaugurate valedictory meeting

Vayalar Rama Varma memorial meeting to be held


ALAPPUZHA: The valedictory meeting of the weeklong celebrations of the 61st anniversary of the Punnapra-Vayalar revolt will be held at the Martyrs’ Memorial at Vayalar here on Saturday.

The concluding day’s programme will begin with Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan passing on a torch to a rally at the Martyrs’ Memorial at Valiya Chudukadu, Punnapra, at 8 a.m. The rally, in which thousands of party workers are expected to participate, will then move to Vayalar. Apart from Mr. Achuthanandan, Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI (M) District Secretary P.K. Chandranandan, Ministers G. Sudhakaran, T.M. Thomas Isaac, and M.A. Baby, among others, will be present at the function.

The Chief Minister and the other leaders will reach Vayalar at 11 a.m. to pay floral tributes at the memorial there. With the anniversary of the revolt coinciding with the 32nd death anniversary of poet and lyricist Vayalar Rama Varma, Minister M.A. Baby will inaugurate a cultural meeting in his memory at 2 p.m. at the same venue.

The public meeting signalling the culmination of the weeklong celebrations will be inaugurated by Mr. Achuthanandan at 5 p.m., also at the same venue. Mr. Vijayan, CPI (M) and CPI Ministers and leaders, along with several heroes of the historic uprising, including H.K. Chakrapani, V.K. Thevan, and others, will also participate in the meeting.
