Organisations give support for general strike

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Action Council of State Employees and Teachers and the Association of Kerala Government College Teachers (AKGCT) have announced their decision to join the countrywide general strike on October 30.

In a separate statements here on Friday, the two organisations called upon State employees and college teachers to make the strike, called to protest against pension scheme privatisation, a major success.

They came down heavily on what they termed the Central Government’s attempts to replace the statutory pension scheme with a participatory pension scheme without any firm commitment about the quantum of pension that would be paid to the employees as well as teachers.

Action council chairman A.K. Chandran and general convener K. Rajendran pointed out that the participatory pension scheme was not being implemented in Kerala only because the State was being ruled by the Left Democratic Front government.

The last two United Democratic Front governments had taken the decision to implement the pension scheme.

They had refrained from implementing their decision only because of resistance from the State employees, they said.

J. Prasad, general secretary, AKGCT, in a separate statement, said that college teachers would hold demonstrations on all campuses on October 29 as a prelude to the strike.
