Belgaum
Belgaum: The Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to reject Maharasthra Government’s plea to keep Marathi-speaking areas of Belgaum under Central rule. The apex court on Thursday rejected Maharashtra’s application for imposing Central rule in the Marathi speaking areas of Belgaum. Welcoming the court decision, committee president Ashok Chandargi said here on Friday that Maharashtra and the Central Committee of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) should read between the lines and accept the apex court’s decision with grace. It was time the MES fell in line and learnt to accommodate itself with ground realities instead of continuing to mislead innocent Marathi speaking people, he said. He said the court’s decision had come as a moral defeat both for Maharashtra Government and the MES. He said that the Maharashtra Government in its application had reportedly claimed that 65 to 70 per cent of the people in Belgaum were Marathi-speaking. “These figures are wrong and misleading,” he added.
