CHIKMAGALUR: The Dattamala Abhiyan conducted by the Sangh Parivar at Datta Peetha on Bababudangiri on Friday passed off peacefully. Braving intermittent rain, cold wind and thick mist, about 15,000 devotees, including women, from various parts of the State participated in the Abhiyan and had a darshan of the Datta padukas at the pilgrim centre. Carrying offerings of rice and coconut, the saffron clad devotees bathed in the Honnammanahalla stream before trekking up the hill to the Peetha. They were allowed to enter the shrine through the permanent barricades erected at its entrance. A homa was conducted near Honnammanahalla in the morning as rituals had been banned near the Peetha. Sri Virupaksha Swamy of Hulikere Math, Sri Jayabasavananda Swamy of Basava Mandira, Sri Gurumurthy Shivacharya Swamy of Hunusaghatta and Sri Vrushabendra Swamy of Nandi Math as well as C.T. Ravi and Sunil Kumar, MLAs, participated in the homa. Legislators who visited the shrine included Lalji Tandon, Raghupati Bhat, M.P. Kumaraswamy and D.N. Jeevaraj. Elaborate security arrangements had been made and vehicles carrying devotees had to pass through at least three check posts. The narrow winding road leading to the Peetha witnessed several traffic jams.
