Alternative government is possible: Vatal Nagaraj

Special Correspondent

He says

The legislators and I will seek the outside support from either the JD(S) or the Congress

I met N. Dharam Singh and M.P. Prakash in this connection

Vatal Nagaraj

BANGALORE: President of the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha Vatal Nagaraj has said that a group of legislators is ready to form an alternative government.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Nagaraj said he was aware that he did not have the required strength of legislators to form a full scale government but if the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress were not in a position to form a coalition government, he and some “like-minded” legislators were ready to form an alternative government.

The group of legislators would seek outside support from either the Janata Dal (S) or the Congress.

Stating that he had met Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh and the Janata Dal (S) leader M.P. Prakash earlier in the day, Mr. Nagaraj stated that he had conveyed to them that most of the legislators did not favour elections at this juncture.

If the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) concurred with the group of legislators, they could offer outside support to the minority government.

He said there were nearly 100 MLAs who had made their maiden entry to the Assembly and were not keen on elections now.

Names

The names of the legislators who were in favour of forming a government could not be divulged, he said.

It was also improper to force another election on the people as the State had only recently gone through elections to the urban local bodies.

Advice to Deve Gowda

Taking exception to the Janata Dal (S) president and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda talking of elections, Mr. Nagaraj said at this point of time as a former Prime Minister and head of a major party Mr. Deve Gowda should refrain from talking about elections and work at finding a solution to the political imbroglio.
