Government asked to submit report in court

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday directed the Government to file a report on the deliberations of the Steering Committee which is going into the issue of formulating a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package for acid victims.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Subash B. Adi, pointed out that in its last order, it had directed the Government to place before it the steps sought to be taken by the committee and its recommendations for a comprehensive rehabilitation package for acid victims.

When the Government pleader sought time, the Bench said it would grant time but wanted to know what steps the Government and the steering committee had initiated. It said it was a month ago that it had passed certain directions. “What has happened in the meanwhile?” the Bench asked the Government pleader.

It said mere formulation of a scheme would not suffice. A more comprehensive approach was needed to tackle the issue of acid attacks and rehabilitation of acid victims.

The Bench adjourned further hearing on the case to next week.

Dismissed

Justice Mohan Shantangouder of the High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition by a primary school which had challenged a notice from the Education Department asking why the institution’s recognition should not be withdrawn.

The block education officer had found that the school was continuing even after it had failed to either obtain an interim order from the High Court or accept the voluntary scheme framed by the Government for schools that had violated the policy on medium of instruction.
