PUDUCHERRY: The Forest Department has set up an artificial rookery in the coastal village of Manapet to breed turtles. The decision to set up the rookery followed the discovery of a large number of turtle eggs in burrows on the coast along Veerampattinam, Murthikuppam and Manapet fishing hamlets last year. The eggs could not be hatched as the fishermen sold them to the nearby arrack shops, according to P. Devaraj, Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden. He said that a separate enclosure was made on government land in Manapet to hatch the turtle eggs. Several campaigns on the conservation of turtles had been conducted in the villages where the eggs were found last year.
