Mahila Congress comes out with charter of demands

‘Depoliticise Kudumbasree’

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee on Friday came out with a 19-point charter of demands that included providing statutory powers to the State Women’s Commission, de-politicisation of Kudumbasree project, security for women working in the unorganised sector, effective implementation of dowry and anti-atrocity laws.

The Mahila Congress Committee’s Rights Convention urged the government to take steps to ensure reservation for women in legislative bodies. It expressed concern at the increasing cases of female foeticide, and atrocities against women. It sought legal remedies for various workplace issues, higher plan allocation for women uplift and wage parity. Inaugurating the convention, the former Speaker V.M. Sudheeran said the failure to effectively utilise the existing laws was one of the biggest stumbling blocks to women uplift, rather than the shortcomings in laws.

s Mahila Congress State president Shanimol Usman said that the organisation would continue to fight for women’s issues.

The convention urged the government to encourage women entrepreneurs. It wanted the government to consult women’s organisations cutting across political lines while formulating development schemes.

The politicisation of Kudumbasree had considerably harmed the interests of women and it wanted the government to take steps to depoliticise the most popular poverty eradication programme. The convention expressed concern at the increasing number of hooch tragedies.
