dated October 27, 1957: Kashmir debate

Sir Pierson Dixon, the British delegate, during the resumed debate on Kashmir in the Security Council on October 25 argued that the Security Council in 1949 had attached the greatest importance to demilitarisation and after ten years the “compelling arguments” for making progress towards demilitarisation were stronger than ever before. He started off by paying a tribute to India and Pakistan for the patience they had shown over the Kashmir question and their desire to avoid the danger of a military clash. Sir Pierson said that he could not believe that there were insuperable obstacles to progress on the withdrawal of troops starting from the Pakistani side. “The Security Council cannot ignore all the patient work which has gone into attempting to make progress over the years,” he declared.
