Relaxation on rice export hailed

Dubai: Hit by shortage of rice in the domestic market, residents in Gulf countries, especially the five million Indian expatriates, have heaved a sigh of relief at the move by New Delhi to relax non-basmati rice export.

The India government on Friday lifted the ban on export of superior quality non-basmati rice priced over $ 425 a tonne. The government had on October 9 banned export of all non-basmati rice to augment domestic stock.

Earlier, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf countries faced a shortage after India, which supplies a major chunk, imposed a ban on exporting non-basmati variety. Prices of non-basmati rice were up due to the shortage of the Indian varieties following the ban. — PTI
