Scheme to be popularised

Breeders have to pay Rs. 16 for each sheep as one time premium

In case of death Rs. 1,000 per sheep will be given

Succour: Collector B.Venkatesam handing over cheques to beneficiaries of sheep insurance in Sangareddy on Friday.

SANGAREDDY: The ambitious sheep insurance programme aimed at helping almost seven lakh sheep breeders in the district received lukewarm response from the farmers. So far only 2 lakh sheep breeders enrolled into the scheme offered by the United Insurance Company. The breeders have to pay Rs. 16 for each sheep as one time, yearly premium while the Government pays the remaining part. If the sheep is small then the premium is reduced to half. In case of death the breeder will receive Rs. 1000 per sheep as compensation from the insuring company.

Two insuring branches one at Patancheru another one here have so far distributed Rs. 47 lakh as compensation to the breeders in the district. According to the Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, Khaja Moinuddin, the process of claims was generally initiated once the veterinary doctor certifies the death of the sheep. Equipped with the death certificate the sheep-owner approaches the insuring firm for compensation. The claims generally take 15 days to one month to process, he said. Awareness camps to popularise the scheme have been initiated and the sheep rearing societies were told to encouraged the breeders. United Insurance, regional manager Sharat Kumar, divisional manager Ashok Kumar, branch manager Chenna Kesavulu were present.
