At an estimated cost of Rs.220 crore: Highways Minister

THENI: Massive efforts are on to improve road connectivity to more villages.

In the third phase, new rural roads would be laid at an estimated cost of Rs.220 crore this year, said Minister for Highways P. Swaminathan.

Talking to media persons at Uthamapalayam in the district on Friday, he said the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development had funded these rural road projects.

Already 500-km-long rural roads had been laid covering several villages in the first two phases, he said.

Besides rural roads, the Highways Department had also been simultaneously developing other roads in the State to improve road connectivity to towns and municipalities.

A total of 27,000 km long road was being laid in the State. Land acquisition was over.

The government was also considering revision of the project cost on the basis of escalation of raw material costs. Already, 250 bridges were built.
