PANAJI: The controversy over the proposed Mopa International Airport in north Goa has once again come alive with the submission of the feasibility report by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to the State Government recently. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, who is busy with the campaign for the south Goa Lok Sabha byelection slated for Wednesday, told presspersons on Friday that he had not yet seen the report. After studying the report, he would contemplate placing it before the high-power committee, chaired by him. The committee is looking into the airport controversy. Chief Secretary J.P. Singh had earlier said that the report had been received but it was unlikely to be examined till the byelection was over. The report is understood to have made it clear that two international airports would not be viable for Goa. Shantaram Naik, Rajya Sabha MP and a member of high-power committee, on Friday demanded that the Dabolim airport should have a bigger “integrated passenger terminal” than the one that was planned. According to the current proposal, the terminal is designed to handle 1,000 passengers a day. Mr. Naik said the Dabolim airport should have a passenger terminal to handle at least 3,000 passengers if a bigger one could not be constructed owing to lack of land. He was unhappy that the Goa Government and the Airports Authority of India had to repeatedly plead with the Navy for more land, which actually belonged to the Government.
