HYDERABAD: AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily on Friday said that Andhra Pradesh was a great experimental ground where populist welfare and developmental programmes had been successfully implemented that could be replicated by other Congress ruled States.

“In three-and-a-half years, Dr. Reddy has done what a Government would take five years to do,” Mr. Moily remarked at a press conference after attending the party’s manifesto implementation and APCC coordination committee meetings here at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday.

The meeting was attended among others by the Chief Minister, in-charge APCC chief G. S. Rao, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Shiv Charan Mathur and former Union Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief.

He said Jalayagnam programme to bring 35-lakh acres under irrigation was unprecedented. Though everybody had doubts whether the free power scheme could be sustained it has proved everybody wrong, he said, adding that 94 per cent farmers have reaped its benefit.

Referring to the Indiramma housing scheme, he said construction of 60-lakh houses before 2009 is possible. He noted that Arogyasri health insurance scheme was a boon for the poor.

He said the Rs. 2 per kg rice scheme would also be a success. However, he said the Government had to take a look at the rehabilitation package for the displaced people. He wanted the Government to review its performance as the coming year would be crucial before the party faces elections.

He said there was not dissident activity in the State.

On show cause notices served on P. Janardhan Reddy and M. Sashidhar Reddy, he said they were asked to correct themselves.

Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy said it was unfortunate that TDP president N. Chandarbabu Naidu was faulting the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not giving him an appointment.

“It is ridiculous to say that Telugu pride is hurt because appointment was not given,” he added.
