Maharishi Valmiki rath flagged off

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday flagged off the Maharishi Vamiki Rath from his 7 Race Course Road residence here by lighting the traditional lamp and breaking a coconut in front of a picture of the great saint on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

Following the flag-off, the Rath passed through various parts of the Capital before reaching Valmiki Mandir on Panchkuian Road where it was welcomed by thousands of devotees.

The Maharishi Valmiki birth anniversary function was organised by All-India Congress Committee secretary and MLA Jai Kishan who said the great poet Maharishi Valmiki had done Indian culture proud by writing the epic Ramayana. He appealed to members of the community to follow the path shown by him and draw inspiration from his writings.
