Prof. Bina Agarwal receiving her honorary doctorate
NEW DELHI: The Institute of Social Studies, Europe’s leading institution for development studies, has conferred an honorary doctorate on Bina Agarwal, professor of economics at the Institute of Economic Growth here. Prof. Agarwal was honoured at a ceremony at The Hague this past week.
The ceremony was inaugurated by the Mayor of The Hague and the ISS Rector and was attended by 500 people including academics, ambassadors, policymakers and members of European universities and research institutes.
In her acceptance speech, Prof. Agarwal spoke about “Rethinking collectivities”, focusing on the importance of production collectivities of the poor, especially women, for their empowerment, and on the need for strategic and vertical alliances among diverse collectivities for a new moral order. A workshop in honour of her work was held the following day.
Prof. Agarwal has joined the likes of Edward Said and Nobel laureates Jan Tinbergen and Amartya Sen in receiving an honorary doctorate from ISS.
