Powerloom weavers’ strike from today

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Political parties and trade unions have decided to observe indefinite strike from October 27 in Chennimalai in support of powerloom weavers demands.

Hence, all the 5,000-odd powerlooms will remain closed. Demanding hike in bonus and wages, the AITUC had declared that they would resort to an indefinite strike from Saturday and other trade unions also supported it.

Till Friday evening, no talks were conducted between the powerloom owners and trade unions.

On Friday afternoon, a joint committee of political parties was formed and it urged the powerloom owners to grant 25 per cent bonus to the weavers, 30 per cent wage hike from November, all the workers should be included in the Provident Fund Scheme and workers should be included in the Employees State Insurance Scheme.

The committee expressed its support for the strike and said if the powerloom owners called for talks, they were ready to participate in it.
