Twenty-20 tourney with a difference

Rourkela: It was Twenty-20 World Cup, but with a difference. Inmates of the special jail at Panposh, 20 km from here, participated at a Twenty-20 cricket match wearing different coloured uniforms.

With the growing popularity of cricket, the jail authorities had organised the World Cup for one month as part of its jail reform programme.

The inmates were divided into 16 teams branded with the names of the cricket-playing countries. The matches were played inside the jail with inmates, both male and female and staff members as supporters cheering the players.

The match was inaugurated on September 25 last. And the final was played between Kenya and Scotland on Thursday, exactly one month after its beginning.

‘Kenya’ winners

Kenya won the championship in the final defeating Scotland by four runs in a nail-biting finish. Winning the toss, Kenya elected to bat first were all out scoring 70 runs in 11.2 overs, in reply Scotland scored 66 all out in 15 overs. Madan Koira of Kenya won the man of the match award for his best performance. Sub-Collector, Panposh, Mahendra Patnaik who attended as the chief guest on the final day, presented the trophy to the winners. -PTI
