Central Akademi faulted for not including Oriya play in Ranga Sangam

BHUBANESWAR: If Oriya theatre has little visibility at the national level, the fault lies with the theatre organisations of the State who are lagging behind in promoting themselves.

Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Deputy Secretary Om Prakash Bharati observed this while addressing the media here on Friday. He is in the city for the week-long ‘Rang Pratibha’ young theatre directors’ festival commencing on Sunday. The event, the first of its kind for Orissa, is being hosted by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, new Delhi in association with Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi to spot out young talents in theatre direction.

Mr.Bharati also admitted that it was a fault on the part of the Central Akademi to host the ’Ranga Sangam’ theatre festivals for four years in a row without inclusion of an Oriya play. “We have urged theatre directors of Orissa to keep the Akademi informed about their productions and performances; so that the selectors in New Delhi be aware of the Oriya theatre scene today,” he revealed.

The Akademi official, a National School of Drama product, emphasised on inter-state theatre exchange programme. He lauded the multi-lingual annual drama festival being hosted in the city by the well-known Satabdira Kalakar theatre organisation.

The Akademi has deputed four theatre experts to observe the plays, interact and guide the young directors, Mr. Bharati disclosed. They are national award winner director B.Jayashree from Bangalore, E.Ibrahim from Kerala, Kunal Jha from Patna and Amitabh dasgupta from Dew Delhi, he added. The State Akademi has also invited 10 theatre experts to act as observers, it was learnt.
