OLD IS GOLD: Pudukottai Collector D. Uthirakkumaran with a senior citizen.
PUDUKOTTAI: Entertainment, fun and games enthralled a group of senior citizens at a function organised to mark ‘International Day of Older Persons’ here recently.
It was a rare opportunity for a group of elderly men and women, who vied with one another in exhibiting their talent, much to the delight of the audience. While some preferred to participate in fancy dress competition, others took part in singing competition.
The function was organised jointly by the Social Welfare Department and voluntary organisations such as Grama Swaraj, Oazoane, Reco and Dharma.
Collector D. Uthirakkumaan gave away the prizes to the winners. He appealed to them to take maximum advantage of assistances given by the government. Priority would be given to aged persons to get kits such as hearing-aid and spectacles.
The elderly persons were visibly elated when the Collector honoured each of them with a shawl.
Sub-Collector (Social Security Scheme) A. Arutchelvan, District Social Welfare Officer A. Azhaguselvi and District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer M. George Doss were among those who spoke.
