Narcotics are available in the metropolis. But police are determined to maintain vigil, writes L. Srikrishna.. A few major seizures including that of heroin, opium and foreign liquor bottles worth over Rs one crore came as a morale booster to the Chennai Police recently. Though different reasons were cited for the successful operations, collection of intelligence from reliable sources and a well-laid network of informers helped them, say police officials. Recently, the North Beach police arrested Jabbar (52) from Manali and based on his confession, secured two others — Sekar (46), a Sri Lankan Tamil and Lakshmi (53) of New Delhi — from a lodge in Anna Nagar. The police found a ‘packet’ in their possession allegedly containing heroin weighing about 700 grams, estimated to be worth Rs 70 lakh in the international market, the police say. Though agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) carry out such raids and seize narcotic substances, the police consider this arrest important. “We have trained personnel not only in gathering information on movements of suspected people but also informers in different areas in the jurisdiction,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (North) M. Ravi. “Be it in the heroin case or in the seizure of foreign liquor bottles, their accuracy helped us ,” he adds. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Harbour) P. Nagarajan said that they were watching the movements of the trio and finally executed the operation, using a decoy as a buyer. According to the confession of those arrested, they had procured the heroin from a ‘doctor’ in Bhopal and carried it clandestinely by train. After reaching the city on October 12, the two had got in touch with Jabbar of Manali. “They were about to identify the buyer for the heroin which was fixed at Rs 70 lakh, but before the deal came through, the special team laid the trap”, Mr.Nagarajan said. In the foreign liquor seizure case also, the police found that the accused had procured as many as 500 bottles from various passengers arriving from Colombo and allegedly planned to sell them off during the ensuing festivals at a premium. Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran has been encouraging police personnel to interact with the common man as it helps in gathering intelligence . Though the police are happy about such seizures, narcotic substances are available for a price in the metropolis. But, the custodians of law are determined to maintain extra vigil.
