It was a novel crime involving women. A handful of women managed to cheat a young housewife at Vanamamalai Nagar last week and relieved her of some gold ornaments. On October 18, three middle-aged women approached the complainant around noon claiming to be representatives of the Madappuram Bhadrakaliamman Temple. They first sought some money to perform milk abishekam at Madappuram for the good of the family. When the housewife was visibly reluctant, they said it was under
the instructions of ‘Amman’ that they had come to the house. Immediately, the victim parted with Rs. 600. The women said they would come back a few days later with ‘prasadam.’
The next Tuesday, the trio came back, this time with three more accomplices. After handing over some ‘prasadam,’ they said another puja had to be performed at the temple for which more milk and some jewellery were required. Even as her husband was present at home, the god-fearing woman, quietly walked into the bedroom, took 8 sovereigns of gold jewels and handed them over to them .
“Some ash powder was used to mesmerise her temporarily. My wife can identify the women,” says her husband. When enquiries were made at Madappuram, the temple authorities denied that there was any puja performed. They also said to have received complaints of some women cheating housewives in a similar fashion.
