SHGs for women’s uplift: Stalin

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Successive DMK governments have implemented several welfare and development measures aimed at social and economical uplift of women. The self help group concept and reservation for women in local bodies were prominent among the steps taken to encourage women come out of shackles, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said here on Thursday.

After laying the foundation stone for several projects, launching new schemes and distributing government welfare, Mr. Stalin said it was the DMK regime that launched the self help group concept aimed at economic and social emancipation of women and help them lead a life of self-confidence. The scheme had no political or ulterior motive but was solely aimed at the uplift of women.

That it had grown into a mammoth movement reflected in the large participation of women in local governing bodies, he said adding that there were 4,225 women local body leaders in various levels of panchayats in the State in addition to 5,427 women local body members.

More than that, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi strived for installing a woman as President, besides calling for urgent steps for 33 per cent reservation of seats in legislatures for women. Women benefited whenever the DMK came to power, he said.

Turning to implementation of welfare schemes, Mr. Stalin said that over 34 lakh colour television sets would be distributed free of cost to ration card holders during the third phase of implementation of the project in the State.
